Intersectionality

This year, Allenby’s school development plan is focused around the value of equity. In order to facilitate this, the DEI committee would like to highlight a concept — intersectionality — that very much supports and affirms the rich diversity of voices, backgrounds and histories that make up our amazing community.

Words and images are powerful and we hope that the age-appropriate video below will further help our families have those important conversations about discrimination and oppression.

What is Intersectionality?

Intersectionality is a term coined in 1989 by an American professor, Dr. Kimberlé Crenshaw, to describe how race, class, gender, and other individual characteristics “intersect” with one another, overlap and are linked.

Intersectionality is the acknowledgement that everyone has their own unique experiences of discrimination and oppression, and we must consider everything that can marginalize people – gender, race, class, sexual orientation, physical ability, etc.
