Heritage Months & Days of Significance

The TDSB is proud to recognize important days of significance throughout the school year, including a number of heritage and history months. TDSB Committees, made up of community members and staff, are in place for many of these to plan activities that celebrate the month and our diverse TDSB community.

October is:

  • Islamic Heritage Month
  • Somali Heritage Month
  • Latin America History Month
  • Dwarfism Awareness Month
  • ADHD Awareness Month
  • Learning Disabilities Awareness Month
  • Invisible Disabilities Month

Days of Significance:

  • October 19–25: Invisible Disabilities Week
  • October 20: Diwali

Diwali: The Festival of Lights

On Monday, October 20th, we’re excited to share that many of our students will be celebrating Diwali, the spectacular Festival of Lights! This major holiday is observed by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists around the world, typically falling in the late autumn (October or November).
Diwali is a celebration of the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. Families clean their homes, wear new clothes, and light up their houses with small clay lamps called diyas. These lights symbolize hope and new beginnings. Celebrations often involve:

  • Prayers (Puja): Offering prayers to the Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity.
  • Feasts and Sweets: Sharing delicious traditional foods and treats called mithai.
  • Fireworks: Enjoying dazzling firework displays.
  • Gathering: Spending time with family and friends.

We wish all our families celebrating a joyful and prosperous Diwali!

Invisible Disabilities Awareness Week

Next week, we recognize Invisible Disabilities Awareness Week (third week of October). This is a time to learn about and show empathy for students and members of our community who live with conditions that aren’t immediately visible.

An invisible disability is a physical, mental, or neurological condition that limits a person’s movements, senses, or activities but is not obvious to an outside observer. Examples include chronic pain, fatigue, diabetes, autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, and mental health disorders.

Why is awareness important?

  • It helps us challenge stigma and misconceptions.
  • It encourages empathy and support for everyone.
  • It reminds us that we all face unique challenges, and a little patience and understanding goes a long way in making our schools and communities inclusive.

Let’s work together to create an environment where all students feel seen, supported, and valued.

Islamic History Month
This October 2025 is themed “Pioneering Muslim Communities in Canada ~ Cultivating Spaces for Comfort, Growth, and Learning Over Time,” to recognize the rich heritage, contributions, and ongoing presence of Muslim communities across the country.

The TDSB provides resources for teachers and families to learn more about arts & architecture, social advocacy, traditions and celebrations, athletes and artists of Islamic Heritage.

Somali Heritage Month
October is Somali Heritage Month in the TDSB!

This is a wonderful chance for all of us to learn about the incredible history and vibrant culture of the Somali people. Did you know that Canada is home to one of the largest Somali communities outside of Africa?

During this month, we celebrate all the important things that people of Somali descent have brought to our city and our country—in school, in business, in the arts, and in everything else!

We recognize their unique heritage by enjoying:

  • Storytelling and Poetry: Somalia is known as a “Nation of Poets,” and we can explore their beautiful tradition of words.
  • Traditional Music and Dance: Learning about different rhythms and movements.
  • Amazing Food and Clothing: Discovering new tastes and colourful styles.
  • A History of Resilience: Celebrating the strength and pride of the Somali community.

Let’s celebrate and share the richness of Somali culture together this October!

Latin American History Month

October is Latin American History Month in Toronto! This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the rich history, vibrant cultures, and significant contributions of people from Latin America who have made Toronto and Canada their home.

Latin America is a diverse region encompassing over 20 countries in Central America, South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. This is a great month to learn about Latin America and celebrate:

  • Cultural Diversity: Exploring the music, dances (like Salsa and Tango), art, and unique traditions from various Latin American countries.
  • Historical Figures: Learning about important historical leaders, scientists, and artists.
  • Community: Recognizing the immense impact Latin American communities have on our city’s food, language, and cultural landscape.

We encourage you to talk to your children about the diversity of the world and celebrate the contributions of the Latin American community this month!

ADHD Awareness Month
October is also ADHD Awareness Month! ADHD stands for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

This month is a time to help everyone understand that some students’ brains work a little differently. Students with ADHD are often:

  • Super Creative: They have big, imaginative ideas!
  • Energetic: They have lots of wonderful energy.
  • Passionate: They can focus deeply on things they love.

We want to make sure everyone feels supported, understood, and celebrated for their unique strengths! Let’s remember to be patient, kind, and supportive of all the different ways our classmates learn and focus.

Dwarfism Awareness Month
October is Dwarfism Awareness Month, with International Dwarfism Awareness Day on October 25th. This day celebrates people with dwarfism and spreads awareness.

Dwarfism is a medical or genetic condition that results in short stature, but it doesn’t stop people from doing amazing things! A great organization called Little People of America provides support and information to individuals with dwarfism and their families.

We encourage all students to wear green on Friday, October 24th, to show our support. The date honours Billy Barty, an American actor with dwarfism who founded Little People of America in 1957.

Learning Disabilities Awareness Month
October is also a time for Learning Disabilities Awareness Month!

A learning disability (LD) means a person’s brain takes in and processes information in a special way. This can sometimes make reading, writing, or math a challenge—but it has nothing to do with how smart they are!

This month helps us:

  • Celebrate Different Brains: We learn that everyone’s brain is unique and powerful!
  • Focus on Strengths: Students with LDs often have amazing skills in areas like art, sports, science, or creativity.
  • Be a Good Friend: We can show extra kindness and support to help our friends who learn differently to feel successful and confident.

Let’s all work together to create a caring school where every student can shine!
