A devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit outside the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu on April 25. This is the worst earthquake to hit the area in 80 years. The death toll continues to rise. Buildings, homes, streets, squares, and ancient temples collapsed. Rescuers continue to search through the rubble hoping to find survivors.
The people of Nepal desperately need help. Several Canadian registered charities are now actively providing relief with the focus on first aid, search and rescue, and support to first responders. The Canadian Red Cross has deployed a mobile field hospital which will house a maternity ward and complete paediatric services.
If Allenby students would like to assist with this initiative, we are hoping they will take part in “Helping Hands for Nepal/Un coup de main pour Népal.” Here’s how it works:
1) Students are asked to earn the amount they would like to donate by doing age-appropriate “jobs” or household tasks. A suggested amount is $1 per job.
2) They trace and cutout their hand and then write the task on each finger of their cutout. Click here for a picture of the Helping Hands for the Philippines/Un coup de main pour les Philippines.
We hope this initiative not only raises much needed funds for Nepal, but also creates a meaningful donation drive by initiating discussions at home about the cause and the power of giving.
The Canadian government will match personal donations made until May 25th. The APA will donate all funds raised to Canadian Red Cross.
Donations can be made online (tax receipts will be issued for any amount of an online donation) or bring your donation to school with this form (manual tax receipts will only be given for donations over $20).
All helping hands, donations and forms (only for donations over $20) can be dropped off in the office in the bin marked “Helping Hands/Un coup de main” If you donate online, don’t forget to bring in your helping hand! Deadline for donations brought to school is Friday, May 22.
We thank you in advance for your support. If you have any questions, please email chairs@allenbyparents.com.
