Math Olympics

Allenby participated in the North West 3 Math Olympics in January. This was the first year of this event and it was so successful, it is likely to be expanded in future years. This year, the participants were in Grades 4 and 5. Unfortunately, we had a very short timeline to prepare. Four students were selected to be the Allenby team and did quite well. They were Jake Goodman, Ben Chan, Rebecca Heinrich, and Samantha Barton

Although the Allenby Team did not win overall, Jake won 3rd place and Ben won 2nd place for an individual challenge.

The Math Club members and, in fact, all interested students, are encouraged to participate in World Math Day. Details: The site is www.worldmathsday.com

According to the website, it is all mental arithmetic, in 60 second challenges.  You can play 100 times and there are 5 different levels, and participants are sorted by age level.  See the section on the site “About”, it sums it all up quickly.

In 2012 the contest is on March 7th.  Registration and practice takes place Feb 1 – 28.

Thank you to Mme Payne for taking this initiative with the help of Mrs. Sherman and Ms. McGee.
