Principal’s Message

Dear Parents,

Administration of Medication
Each year students become ill, regardless of the measures that we take at school to minimize the spread of illness. In many cases parents take their child to see the doctor and are prescribed medication that relies on its administration during the school day. We are not allowed to administer medication to children without the attached paperwork completed, which requires a doctor’s signature. To avoid a second visit to the doctor, I advise parents to download the attached to your mobile devices to have with you when visiting the doctor.

Influenza
If you’ve ever looked after a child who was sick with the flu, you know how sick they can become. Each year, 30% of children get sick from the influenza virus. The virus spreads easily in schools.

Protect your child’s health. Here are a few easy action steps.

1. Get your family vaccinated – vaccination is the best protection.

  • Children 2 to 17 years old can get either an injection or nasal spray vaccine.
  • The vaccine is free for everyone
  • It is available at doctor’s offices, pharmacies (for children 5 years and older), or book an appointment at a Toronto Public Health clinic.

2. Practise good health habits:

  • Encourage kids to wash their hands often
  • Cover their cough or sneeze
  • Stay home when they are sick

3. Have questions? Talk to your health care provider; visit the Toronto Public Health website or call their Immunization Line at 416-392-1250.

Here’s to staying healthy this fall and winter.

Allenby Showcases
We have two Showcases this year providing opportunities for Allenby students to perform musical/dance pieces. We will also have a Music Night showcasing our itinerant music programs and our primary and junior choirs. In the spring, will be our Kindergarten Concert.

There will be a dress rehearsal the day before each Showcase at 10:35 am providing all students the opportunity to see the Showcases. Parents who cannot attend on the evening of the Showcases are welcome to attend the dress rehearsal.

Each family will receive two tickets to attend the Showcase. We must limit the number of tickets given the fire code for the gym.

If your child is performing they should arrive to their classroom at 6:30 pm in order to ensure we start on time.

We will NOT be providing childcare for the Showcases given concerns with supervising the number of students who attend. Please make childcare arrangements. If any students attend as part of the two tickets per family, they are asked to remain seated with their parent and not to sit at the front of the gym.

Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to our performances this year. Here are the dates and classes performing over the course of the year.

Itinerant Music
We are anxious to get started with the itinerant music program at Allenby (band or strings) open to our grade five and six students, however, we are awaiting the hiring of a strings instructor by the TDSB. In the meantime, we are doing an inventory of our instruments and sending some for repairs so that once an instructor is hired, we can begin. Once a strings instructor is assigned to Allenby, there will be an assembly for all grade 5 and six students outlining the two different programs, the instruments, and the expectations of participation in the itinerant music program. Following the assembly, letters of interest will be distributed for both students and parents to sign. We will update parents in the newsletter once a strings instructor has been assigned.
