The Parent Involvement Advisory Committee (PIAC) is one of several TDSB advisory committees. The goal of PIAC is to aid access to information and resources for parents to support more effective parental engagement in their child’s learning. The Ward 8 PIAC Rep chaired a meeting for Ward 8 school councils on October 3, 2017. In attendance from Allenby were Lisa Parker (APA Co-Chair), David Heath (APA Director of Safety) and Stephanie Chong (APA Ward 8 Coordinator). This was meant as an opportunity to share information among various Ward 8 school councils in a forum separate and apart from regular ward meetings of the TDSB. Trustee Jennifer Arp was also in attendance for part of the meeting, and provided some updates from the TDSB. Topics discussed included:
- The recent release of the first draft of the Enhancing Equity Task Force Report, available on the TDSB website. Revisions to the TDSB equity policy have been a cornerstone of recent reforms, with wide-ranging implications. Parents will have an opportunity to engage in consultations in the coming months.
- Trustee Arp is planning two Ward 8 events. The first will take place during the first week of November (exact date TBA), and will consist of a school council orientation event. The second will take place on a yet-to-be-determined date in the New Year at Allenby, and will discuss school zone safety. Stay tuned for more details.
- The annual PIAC conference has been scheduled for Saturday, November 25th at Earl Haig. This will feature workshops on councils, fundraising, etc. More details will be distributed as they become available.
- Continuation of workshops developed through a grant that was received by Ward 8 last year was also discussed. A planning committee has been struck to move forward with several ideas that were generated in the previous workshop session.
It is intended that these Ward 8 school council meetings be continued in the future. Dates are being set, and we encourage all interested Allenby parents to attend.
