Last year, the APA and the school aligned their budgets to focus on the school’s Key Priorities (STEM, Technology, Literacy and Mindfulness). Now that the APA budget has gone through a year under this collaborative approach with the school, the APA wanted to circle back with parents to verify that this approach continues to be supported and that our fundraising dollars are being spent with parents’ approval.
A majority of respondents agreed with 2016/2017 APA spending decisions and also support collaborative spending going forward. For the 2017/2018 school year the APA and the school will each be allocating at least $15,000 to STEM and Technology, including purchasing 6 to 8 Chromebooks for all Grade 5 and 6 classes. A major literacy purchase will include resources for french junior (Gr 4-6) literature circles (resources for English literature circles are easily borrowed from a TDSB lending program). And, the APA will allocate $5,500 to each of Phys Ed and the Arts. The APA will continue to fund Experts in the School and Classroom Enrichment Grants.
In terms of next steps:
- Parents are invited to provide additional comments at our upcoming APA meeting (May 31).
- The APA Treasurer will be drafting and presenting a formal budget for 2017/2018 (also for discussion at the May meeting).
- The APA will be developing a plan for increased communication around spending.
- The APA will work to address all comments provided through the survey over the next few months (June/September/October)
Enjoy the long weekend!
