Principal’s Message

On Friday, March 27, for Allenby’s Earth Hour, the Grade 4/5 students in room 204, along with their student teacher, Madame Xuereb (Mme X.), painted birds to raise awareness for the Toronto based FLAP (Fatal Light Awareness Program).

Since 1993, the non-profit organization FLAP Canada has raised awareness about the dangers that our bright city lights and large office towers pose to migrating birds, especially night-migrating birds who are drawn to and confused by the bright light in urban environments. The students became aware of the fatal collisions that occur for birds when they fly into tall, lit buildings. In 2006, FLAP collaborated with the City of Toronto to launch Lights Out Toronto (LOT), an ongoing awareness campaign aimed at promoting bird and energy conservation.

Turning lights out saves birds, energy and money, and reduces light pollution and CO2 emissions. The students have asked us all to look for our beautiful birds around the school and TURN OUT YOUR LIGHTS Allenby Community!

The grade 2 students in room 107 helped as well with their digital Birds of Allenby manual. Come and check out the Bird Bulletin board in the hall across from Mr. Robert’s classroom to see what our students have accomplished using technology.
