February is Black History Month

This week marks the beginning of Black History Month, a focused opportunity for each of us to reflect on the history, contributions and reality of Black members of our community, both locally and globally.

From the TDSB: “The TDSB proudly recognizes African Heritage (Black History) Month. It is as an occasion to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of peoples of African descent to Canada and the world. The chosen theme for 2022-2023 is Black Joy.”

This month, we invite you to explore and celebrate the impact of the Black community as well as also recognizing the challenges, injustices and systemic discrimination they have endured and continue to endure.

There are many community resources available as well as events taking place over the next month that we will share in order to raise awareness of Black History and encourage participation within our Allenby community.

We encourage everyone to view the following initial educational resources that celebrate black history, and acknowledge, address and aim to tackle anti-Black racism and discrimination.

Toronto District School Board (TDSB): The TDSB’s Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement, which held its grand opening in June 2022, is dedicated to improving the experiences and outcomes for Black students and aims to be responsive to the voices of Black communities who continue to advocate for systemic change within education institutions and for dismantling anti-Black racism at the TDSB. The Centre offers a variety of programs, initiatives and engagement opportunities for students and families. Please visit the CEBSA website to view upcoming events and resources.

CBC Kids: This site includes some good information and resources that are kid friendly. Please visit the CBC Kids website for more information.

Timeline of Black History in Canada (1600-2019): This resource from the Canadian Encyclopedia details an interesting illustrated timeline of the stories, experiences, and accomplishments of people of African origin in the context of Canadian history from the early 1600s to today. Please visit the website here to learn more.

City of Toronto: Each February, the City of Toronto produces and supports events and exhibits during Black History Month.  In 1979, Toronto became the first municipality in Canada to proclaim Black History Month. Please visit toronto.ca to view upcoming events.

Local Events: This site lists several events around Toronto and the broader GTA that are celebrating and recognizing Black History Month. Please visit Eventbrite for more details.

If students, staff or families wish to share additional resources, personal narratives or upcoming events, please don’t hesitate to email Faith and Adeeba at AllenbyDEI@gmail.com.
