Fall Food Drive

This year, Allenby will participating in the North York Harvest Food Bank’s Thanksgiving Food Drive. As an independent, charitable organization, it is one of the largest food banks in Toronto, distributing 1.6 million pounds of food in 2010 through 60 community programs.

Last year, families and individuals in northern Toronto received nearly 150,000 food hampers through our network of neighbourhood food banks, community kitchens, perinatal programs for expecting mothers and new parents, shelters for women and youth, and drop-in meal programs. We are proud to be a part of this initiative and share in a vision of a community where all members are able to meet their food needs.

Please help us make a difference by sending non-perishable food donations to school with your child until the collection deadline of Friday, September 30th. Below are some suggested food giving ideas:

  • Grains – rice (white and brown), flour & whole grains (wheat, barley, bulgur), quinoa, pasta
  • Canned fish and meat – salmon, tuna, sardines, corned beef, chicken and other non-pork products
  • Canned or dried beans – chickpeas, kidney beans, lentils
  • Cooking oil – canola oil, olive oil
  • Canned fruit – peaches, pears, pineapple (packed in juice and water instead of syrup)
  • Canned vegetables – corn, green beans, broccoli, mushrooms, carrots, water chestnuts, cabbage, sweet potato
  • Fruit juice – 100% juice
  • Cereals – High fibre, whole grain or multi-grain cereals, oatmeal
  • Healthy snacks and spreads – peanut butter, almond butter, unsalted nuts, low fat popcorn, low fat granola bars or cereal bars, crackers, cookies (arrowroot, digestive, oatmeal)
  • Baby products – formula, infant cereals, baby food, diapers
  • Canned or powdered milk
  • Spices and seasonings – turmeric, mustard seed, chili powder, curry paste, sauces and marinades
