Eco schools

Congratulations Allenby Community!

We have been awarded Eco Schools Platinum Status with a score of 91%. That is our highest score ever! We have remained at Eco Gold Status for the past 5 years and this year we decided to push ourselves by initiating full-school campaigns and highlighting work by individual classrooms. This work would be impossible without the MANY teachers willing to jump in with both feet and support Eco-Literacy and Student Voice in their learning environment. We are very luck to work with such a dynamic group of adults and students looking for ways to make a positive impact on their natural environment.

Additionally, we have been granted a water bottle refill station to be installed next fall in our lunchroom!

A few school-wide highlights from the Eco Team include:

  • A Plant in Every Classroom Campaign
  • Classroom Worm Bin Program
  • Holiday Recycled Art Project
  • Bike Lanes Challenge
  • Canadian Geographic Migration Map
  • Earth Day Full School Picnic

How can we improve?
1. The Eco Auditor noticed “A high degree of recycling contamination was noted in the garbage bulk bin.” One of her suggestions is to “Consider creating a parent committee to handle the waste side of events held at Allenby PS so that the community is on board with all recycling and green bin rules.”

2. We have been awarded a substantial Toronto Live Green Grant to develop an Outdoor Classroom Space at the front of our school. In the fall we need to mobilize our community of adults to support this initiative. If you enjoy design, gardening and working in a team please stay tuned for ways to get involved in “The Outdoor Classroom Collective“!

3. Each family plays an important role to help embed earth friendly routines. SUMMER CHALLENGE: Eliminate Ziploc bags and store bought water from your lifestyle! Help Allenby make a “Litterless Snacks” plan for the fall. Explore and test the alternatives and share your success stories on Twitter @AllebyPS_TDSB @EcoSchoolsTDSB @TDSBEcoParents
