The unprecedented devastation in the Philippines is resulting in a public health crisis. Emergency response agencies are desperate for funds. Although it is tempting to send items such as blankets and clothes, aid agencies discourage this and repeatedly ask for funds during such crisis. For this reason, the APA has come up with an event to raise money. As you have probably read, the Federal Government is matching each dollar donated by individuals to a registered charity that earmarks funds to this crisis. Funds raised through this event will go to MÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÈRES (MSF)/ DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS.
Please see http://www.msf.ca/campaigns/typhoon-haiyan-relief-philippines/ for information.
As a way of engaging our children in this fundraising effort, and to support the Filipino community, the APA is coordinating the event: Helping Hands for the Philippines. We hope you and your children will participate.
The Fundraiser
Download a cut out hand and a form. Kids are to complete five age-appropriate “jobs” or household tasks to earn money. We recommend they earn one dollar per “job” but this amount is completely discretionary, as are the “jobs”. The child writes his/her name on the hand and the “job” on each finger. Once completed, the child brings back to his/her teacher the following: (1) the cut out hand; and (2) the money earned with the accompanying completed form. Please keep the hand separate from the envelope containing the money and form. The hand will then be placed on a wall with the rest of the “helping hands”.
Please submit the form, funds and “hand” by no later than Monday, December 2, 2013
