National Deaf History Month

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) introduced National Deaf History Month in 1997 to recognize the accomplishments of people who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Research shows that deaf persons often experience educational and employment gaps compared with hearing people. Four primary root causes have been found to affect outcomes for deaf people, including limited access to language and communication, reduced social opportunities, negative attitudes and biases, and lack of qualified and experienced professionals.

You can support deaf persons in our community by learning the terminology around how they define themselves. Check out these resources from the Canadian Association of the Deaf and the National Association of the Deaf to learn more, or try reading one of the below books with your children!
