Parents\/Guardians, retired community members etc. who speak French, English or another first language have the unique opportunity to volunteer in the school, support our reading initiative and have a direct impact on improving student achievement. Volunteers will be partnered with selected students to share reading in a Literacy Corner.<\/p>\n
The students and books are carefully chosen by teachers so that the literacy volunteers could meet with their student partner for a 30 minute session once a week. If you have time, you could be partnered with several students. We start with Grade 1 students needing support, then move on up the grades if we have enough reading volunteers.<\/p>\n
All volunteers will be provided with a Police Check (a TDSB Policy when working directly with students), participate in a one hour training workshop to promote consistency in the program, as well as to give strategies to teach reading and even support your own children at home!
