TDSB Committees, made up of community members and staff, are in place for many of these to plan activities that celebrate the month and our diverse TDSB community.<\/p>\n<p>October is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Islamic Heritage Month<\/li>\n<li>Somali Heritage Month<\/li>\n<li>Latin America History Month<\/li>\n<li>Dwarfism Awareness Month<\/li>\n<li>ADHD Awareness Month<\/li>\n<li>Learning Disabilities Awareness Month<\/li>\n<li>Invisible Disabilities Month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Days of Significance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>October 7\u201313: Sukkot<\/li>\n<li>October 14\u201315:\u00a0Shmini\u00a0Atzeret\/Simchat\u00a0Torah<\/li>\n<li>October 20: Diwali<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Somali Heritage Month<\/strong><br \/>\nOctober is Somali Heritage Month in the TDSB!<\/p>\n<p>This is a wonderful chance for all of us to learn about the incredible history and vibrant culture of the Somali people. Did you know that Canada is home to one of the largest Somali communities outside of Africa?<\/p>\n<p>During this month, we celebrate all the important things that people of Somali descent have brought to our city and our country\u2014in school, in business, in the arts, and in everything else!<\/p>\n<p>We recognize their unique heritage by enjoying:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Storytelling and Poetry:<\/strong>\u00a0Somalia is known as a &#8220;Nation of Poets,&#8221; and we can explore their beautiful tradition of words.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Traditional Music and Dance:<\/strong>\u00a0Learning about different rhythms and movements.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amazing Food and Clothing:<\/strong>\u00a0Discovering new tastes and colorful styles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A History of Resilience:<\/strong>\u00a0Celebrating the strength and pride of the Somali community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let&#8217;s celebrate and share the richness of Somali culture together this October!<\/p>\n<p><strong>ADHD Awareness Month<\/strong><br \/>\nOctober is also ADHD Awareness Month! ADHD stands for Attention-Deficit\/Hyperactivity Disorder.<\/p>\n<p>This month is a time to help everyone understand that some students&#8217; brains work a little differently. Students with ADHD are often:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Super Creative:<\/strong>\u00a0They have big, imaginative ideas!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Energetic:<\/strong>\u00a0They have lots of wonderful energy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Passionate:<\/strong>\u00a0They can focus deeply on things they love.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We want to make sure everyone feels supported, understood, and celebrated for their unique strengths! Let&#8217;s remember to be patient, kind, and supportive of all the different ways our classmates learn and focus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Disabilities Awareness Month<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>October is also a time for Learning Disabilities Awareness Month!<\/p>\n<p>A learning disability (LD) means a person&#8217;s brain takes in and processes information in a special way. This can sometimes make reading, writing, or math a challenge\u2014but it has nothing to do with how smart they are!<\/p>\n<p>This month helps us:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Celebrate Different Brains:<\/strong>\u00a0We learn that everyone&#8217;s brain is unique and powerful!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Focus on Strengths:<\/strong>\u00a0Students with LDs often have amazing skills in areas like art, sports, science, or creativity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be a Good Friend:<\/strong>\u00a0We can show extra kindness and support to help our friends who learn differently to feel successful and confident.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let&#8217;s all work together to create a caring school where every student can shine!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The TDSB is proud to recognize important days of significance throughout the school year, including a number of\u00a0heritage and history months.
