We also encourage Allenby families to share their celebrations and traditions with us so that we can learn more about each other and connect as a community.<\/p>\n

Hanukkah\u00a0(Chanukah) is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime \u201cfestival of lights,\u201d celebrated with a nightly\u00a0menorah\u00a0lighting, special prayers and fried foods. This year it is from December 25-January 2, 2025.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the heart of the festival is the nightly\u00a0menorah<\/a>\u00a0lighting. The menorah holds nine flames, one of which is the\u00a0shamash<\/em>\u00a0(\u201cattendant\u201d), which is used to kindle the other eight lights. On the first night, we light just one flame. On the second night, an additional flame is lit. By the eighth night of Chanukah, all eight lights are kindled.<\/p>\n

Since\u00a0the Chanukah miracle involved oil<\/a>, it is customary to eat foods fried in oil. The Eastern-European classic is the potato\u00a0latke<\/em>\u00a0(pancake) garnished with applesauce or sour cream, and the reigning Israeli favourite is the jelly-filled\u00a0sufganya<\/em>\u00a0(doughnut).

On Chanukah, it is customary to play with a \u201cdreidel\u201d (a four-sided spinning top bearing the Hebrew letters,\u00a0nun<\/em>,\u00a0gimmel<\/em>,\u00a0hei<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0shin<\/em>, an acronym for\u00a0nes gadol hayah sham<\/em>, \u201ca great miracle happened there\u201d). The game is usually played for a pot of coins, nuts, or other stuff, which is won or lost based on which letter the dreidel lands when it is spun.
