Allenby’s DEI Commitee

Welcome back, Allenby!

The APAs Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee is excited to start another year of great learning and celebration of the individuals that make up our community.

The DEI Committee’s objectives include:

1. Fostering a high degree of engagement, productivity, and conversation with Allenby families about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion issues impacting the Allenby student and family community

2. Organizing, promoting, and launching resources, initiatives, and events that bring awareness of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to the Allenby community

3. Supporting and collaborating with Allenby leadership to review, develop, and advocate for policies and procedures that promote staff and student environments that welcome and engage with DEI practices

If you would like to join the committee this year to work on a specific project, please reach out to us at the Allenby DEI Committee to learn more.

Orange Shirt Day
As mentioned in the Principal’s Message, September 30th is Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in recognition of the harm the Residential School system did to children’s sense of self-esteem and well-being and as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters. Learn more about Orange Shirt Day here.

NOTE: If you pre-ordered orange shirts last June, be on the lookout for an email from the DEI Committee about your next steps to receive the shirt before next week’s Orange Shirt Day!

Community Event
Looking for a rich, cultural experience to take the kids to this weekend? Go to Spadina House (next to Casa Loma) and enjoy a free exhibit and guided tour for the family! Learn about classism, race, and the history of abolitionists in this immersive experience.

Until December 31th, Dis/Mantle explores the story of a freedom seeker, Louisa Pipkin, who escaped enslavement in the US and came to Canada. This art exhibit reimagines Spadina Museum, and places Mrs. Pipkin as the homeowner of the house, creating a safe haven for those seeking freedom through the Underground Railroad.

Location: 285 Spadina Road.
Free Admission
Open: Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, 11:00 am to 5:00 pm and Thursdays 11:00am to 7:00pm
